Beautiful calm weather and a little foggy. We leave
Kalamos at 10.10 a.m. heading south, we are thinking of going to a small port
in the south of Kefalonia, Kato Katelios. Calm first part, so calm that we
bathe from the boat without anchoring, we stop Hera II and take turns bathing.
We skirt the east coast of Kefalonia, pass Poros and the seaside resort of
Skala. I work en route and can do the whole blogg. After lunch, the wind picks
up, just opposite but Hera II is making good progress. We approach Kato Katelios
carefully, there are rocks to avoid at the entrance to the port. It's going
well, we enter the port, well in the middle between the two dikes. Error ! We
touch and Hera II is stopped short. I'm at the front to prepare the ropes and I
feel the "shock", I have to hold on. Fortunately it is sand and by
accelerating Jens manages to start again. Phew! But it's not over, we touch
again. The wharf is occupied by small boats, but along another wharf we see
somewhat larger fishing boats. We pair up on the largest and moor Hera II. Jens
goes ashore and knocks on the door of the first house. Luckily the young woman
who opens speaks good English and knows everyone in the village. Jens asks if
we can stay tied up to this fishing boat and she says no, this fisherman is
going out to sea at 5:00 this evening. But she says we can back up and get on
the next boat, which we do. The port is quite recent (12-15 years) but has
never been finished and maintained, it is silting up and doesn’t seems in good
shape. We go ashore and there it is another world: beautiful big houses,
beautiful gardens, apartments for rent, restaurants... We bathe but to have
water at the waist we have to go far, we swim in 1.5 m of water. Jens finds a
long bamboo (2 m) to survey the harbor tomorrow when we leave. The fishermen
are friendly, show us where we can take water and explain by gesture where we
have to pass to leave the port. Dinner
on the boat and quiet evening.
